ChatGPT imperiled by European regulators

Italian regulators have banned ChatGPT, a generative AI tool, with immediate effect while giving OpenAI, the tool’s developer, 20 days to address concerns about the way data is collected and processed under threat of a USD 21.7 million fine or up to 4% of annual revenues (whichever is greater).

There have been hints that other European regulators might quickly adopt the same strategy. According to reports, France is reportedly conducting its own investigation, Ireland has requested more information from Italy about the reasons behind the ban.

The German data commissioner has stated that Germany could “in principle” take the same action.
